Mining subcontracting is gated less by trade licences than by site access. A crew can be perfectly qualified and still be unable to start, because the induction, the medical or the site-specific competency has not been done.
This page covers what gets subcontracted in this sector, the credentials worth confirming, and how a job runs on Workforce Marketplace. Early access is open.
What gets subcontracted
The work that most often moves between businesses includes:
- Shutdown and maintenance crews mobilised for a fixed window
- Drill and blast, and the shotfiring that goes with it
- Plant operation on a hire-with-operator basis
- Mobile and fixed plant maintenance, including fitters, boilermakers and sparkies
- Civil works on haul roads, pads and tailings infrastructure
- Labour hire on FIFO and DIDO rosters
- Environmental monitoring and rehabilitation works
Credentials that matter here
The credentials that gate mining work are a different shape to construction. State mining regulators, site operators and approved medical examiners all issue their own:
- Coal Board Medical Certificate, issued by an approved medical examiner and required across coal operations
- NSW Mine Safety Induction through the NSW Resources Regulator, or the QLD Coal Mining Safety and Health Induction through Resources Safety and Health Queensland
- Mine Safety Certificate, held by supervisors, issued per jurisdiction: RSHQ in Queensland, the NSW Resources Regulator in New South Wales
- Shotfirer’s Licence through the state WHS or resources regulator, for anyone handling explosives
- Plant tickets for excavator, dozer, grader, dump truck, roller and water truck, plus dogging and rigging where lifting is involved
- H2S Awareness, Gas Test Atmospheres and Confined Space Entry depending on the operation
- Mine Rescue Team Member where the contract requires emergency response capability
Site operators routinely impose requirements above the regulator’s minimum, and those are contractual rather than legal. Ask the site what it requires before you ask a subcontractor what they hold, or you will mobilise a crew that cannot get through the gate.
What to confirm before work starts
An active ABN. Where a supplier does not quote one, you are generally required to withhold 47 per cent of the payment and remit it to the ATO. Their GST registration also tells you whether the price should carry it.
That the credential is held by the entity you are contracting with. A person can hold a qualification while the business you are paying holds nothing. Check the name on the document against the name on the invoice.
Insurance appropriate to the scope. Public liability is the common one. Depending on the work you may also need professional indemnity, and workers compensation if they carry their own staff.
That the engagement is genuinely a contract for services. Since the Fair Work amendments the test looks at the real substance of the relationship rather than the label on the paperwork, and getting it wrong creates back-pay, superannuation and payroll tax exposure. Contractor vs employee in Australia sets out how it now works.
Writing a scope that gets comparable quotes
Mining scopes are priced on mobilisation as much as on the work. What changes the number is the roster and who pays for travel and accommodation, whether the window is fixed and what happens if the shutdown slips, who supplies plant and consumables, what the site standard is for inductions and who pays for the days lost to them, and whether standby time is paid. Set those out and the quotes become comparable.
How it works on Workforce Marketplace
Post the scope with the payment structure it actually uses, whether that is fixed price, hourly, daily, quoted or split into milestones for staged work. Subcontractors apply, and you compare them side by side rather than chasing callbacks.
Every account is ABN-verified at sign-up. Beyond that, subcontractors can submit licences, certifications and insurance for verification, which we review rather than grant automatically. Their profile shows the status against each credential without showing the document, the licence number or the ABN. Verification is opt-in, so a profile may hold credentials that have not been submitted, and it reflects the document as at the date it was reviewed rather than standing indefinitely.
Applying for work costs nothing and there are no leads to buy. Payment runs through Stripe, and Workforce Marketplace never stores your card or bank details.
